Ava Xia is a Chinese multidisciplinary researcher, designer, and practitioner based in London, with a background in environmental architecture. Mixed-media cartography is her primary tool for challenging, celebrating, evidencing, and storytelling. Her practice is driven by environmental and ecological dialogue, both as investigation and visualization, and by the unwritten scripts embedded within landscapes. Her recent work investigates borderland imaginaries through radio practices, examining how they exist as simultaneously static and ever-changing conditions across social, territorial, technological, informational, and ecological architectures. Tracing circulatory relationships between nomadic human and non-human collectives, her methodology foregrounds underrepresented beings through the lenses of metabolism, mobility, and ecological thresholds.

*Future Forward Feature How do we imagine a borderless future? As land is lifted into the air, borders dissolve—not as fixed lines, but as mutable imaginaries. Cultural and infrastructural architectures emerge as political instruments, shaping how movement, belonging, and territory are imagined and contested. With deep respect, this work acknowledges the Tuareg (Kel Tamasheq) community knowledges and Tuareg people across different geographies, from whom I have been honoured to learn. I see the future as one shaped by shared stewardship, mobility, and relational ways of knowing, where land, movement, and story remain inseparable.
