While animating, I draw frames, get to a point where I feel like I have enough to get a couple seconds of animation, then photograph them to see how it moves. I’m blind to how the animation will actually move as I draw the frames. Unlike watching a movie, I don’t need to suspend any disbelief to perceive the frames as an animation once edited together. The persistence of vision, where the brain holds onto an image a couple of seconds after it disappears from view, is done automatically. The fragments (frames) are only one whole in the mind, where outside of our perception they exist as still images. There will always need to be a story to explain how everything led up to the moment you’re in now, and this story will always have blind spots. If you started to doubt the story you’ve told yourself, you could look at your life as fragments that can’t be reconciled into one whole. The fragments that exist separate and inert, only alive and steeped with inexplicable emotion in the mind.
